『酒が内なら知恵は外』¹

　本邦のことわざに『酒は百薬の長』『酒は憂いを払う玉箒（たまははき）』、またイギリスのことわざに『ブドウ酒は老人のミルク』²あるいは『良い酒は良い血を作る』³など、酒を称えるものもあるが、洋の東西を問わず酒の害を説くことわざの方が圧倒的に多い。

　『感情は人を畜生にし、酒はなおさら悪くする』⁴。従って『酒は悪魔の血』⁵ということになる。悪魔の血を多量に飲めば理性を失い、『知恵酒のために曇る』⁶どころか、標記のことわざが示すように知恵は失われてしまう。

　『酒はズボンをはかぬ』⁷とあるように、酒は無作法を引き起こし、『酒が入れば謹慎は去る』⁸結果となる。かくして『しらふの者の胸にたたんでおく事は酔っ払いの舌にのぼる』⁹、すなわち『酒は心の鏡である』¹⁰とあるように『酒は本心を現す』¹¹危険性を孕むのである。

　このように酒を戒めることわざは多いが、いずれも過度の飲酒への警告であり、『酒は自制して飲む者には良し』¹²というお墨付きもある。

　　What is in the heart of the sober man is in the tongue of the drunkard.
10.Vinum animi speculum.
　　Wine is the glass (or mirror) of the mind.
11. Wine shows what a man is.
12. Le vin est bon, qui en prend par raison.
